Happy Birthday Insub!

One year ago, I spent the day, superbowl sunday, tinkering with a Red Hat 6.1 installation.

I ended up getting a DynIP account for it. Little did I know, that 2 days later, I would end up registering insubordinate.net.

Today, Jan 28, 2001 marks insubordinate’s first birthday.

It’s grown from a mail server, to a web server, IRC server, mail list server, and a few other things. For a small machine it’s held up wonderfully.

Blow out the candles and make a wish, Insub.

As everyone who reads this weblog probably knows, there was a [fire] in Cusick WA on Saturday (01/13/00) that killed 3 children, all girls, ages 6 to 15.

And I’m sure that you’ve heard the news reports that the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Department originally suspected that the blaze was started by a methamphetamine lab in the house.

The mother (who is hospitalized from the fire) has adamantly denied there was a meth lab in her home, and today the Sheriff’s Department is saying the fire might have been caused by a faulty space heater.

So which is it? Meth lab or space heater? Is the woman a drug dealer, or just doing what she could to keep her children warm and comfortable? Did the Sheriff’s Department find all the hardware required for making meth, or did they just find a few ingredients (matches, lighter fluid, etc) and make the assumption from there (like I don’t have those things in my garage).

And to add to the immense tragedy that already is: no matter what happens from here on out, be it true or not, the mother of those lost children will always be the “woman who killed her children with a meth lab” to many in the community.

The seed has been planted by the media, watch it grow.
